چکیده

Since Stephen Hales (1769) demonstrated that the distance separating holes pierced through the leg and shin bone of a half-grown chick did not increase despite the increase in length of the whole leg, subsequent investigators, including Hunter (1837), Dubreuil (1913), Haas (1926), Payton (1932) and Lacroix (1949), have established that the epiphysial cartilage is the main site of growth in length of a long bone. The contribution which each epiphysis makes to the growth of bone has not received so much attention. Digby (1916) made some estimates based on a graphic projection of the nutrient canal to the centre of the shaft, and Payton (1932) determined the relative growth rates at the ends of long bones in madder-fed pigs. He showed that the rate of growth at each epiphysis diminished with age and that this was more rapid at the end that was to make the lesser contribution. Roche (1965) showed that the presence of a bony epiphysis was not essential for growth in length. He found that 20 to 30 per cent of elongation of the shafts of the first and second metacarpal bones and the metatarsal bones in white Australian children occurred at the non-epiphysial extremity. While it is clear that each epiphysis makes its own contribution to the length of the bone, it is not apparent whether the contribution of the epiphysis at one end is made irrespective of that at the other, or whether changes in the growth process of one epiphysis can influence that of others. That the latter possibility might be true was suggested by the report of Reidy, Lingley, Gall and Barr (1947). These workers investigated the effect of irradiation on epiphysial growth in the dog. They found that when the dose was directed to joints, as well as relative shortening of the bones there was also evidence of stimulation of growth at the untreated epiphyses of these bones, and they were unable to account for this. The possibility that this stimulation effect was due to the failure of the irradiated epiphysis to grow prompted the present investigation.

The effect of epiphysial stapling on growth in length of the rabbits tibia and femur.

In a previous communication (Hall-Craggs 1968) the results of experimental epiphysiodesis of the upper and lower ends of the rabbit tibia were reported. It was found that when growth in length at either the proximal or distal extremity of the bone was restricted by epiphysiodesis a reduction in the normal deceleration of growth rate occurred at the opposite end. As a result the undamaged epiphy...

Histological Changes of Diaphyse of Tibia and its Central Medulary Chanal Follwing Low-Power Laser Irradiation in Rabbit

Purpose: The reaction of compact bone of diaphyse of tibia and it's bone marrow to low power laser radiation was investigated. Materials and Methods: Ten adult male rabbits were divided randomly into experimental and control groups. Low-power He-Ne laser (36 J/cm2) were radiated into a fixed point of tibia daily for 14 consequative days. Rabbits of control group did not receive laser. At the e...

Air physiogram: technique for visualization of the resected physis in percutaneous epiphysiodesis.

Obtaining an air physiogram improves visualization of the resected physis and allows the surgeon to assess whether a sufficient amount of growth plate has been removed during percutaneous drilling epiphysiodesis. From 2008 through 2011, the air physiogram technique was used in 37 percutaneous epiphysiodesis procedures about the knee (17 femora, 20 tibiae) in 31 children. Average follow-up was 4...

The Effect of Foot Reflexology Massage on Pain in Patients Undergoing Tibia Plaque Surgery: A Randomized Clinical Trial Study

Introduction: One of the major problems of patients after orthopedic surgeries is acute pain. Therefore, the present study was conducted  to evaluate the effect of foot reflexology massage on pain in patients undergoing tibia plaque surgery. Method: The current study is a randomized clinical trial study in which 96 patients who were candidates for tibia plaque surgery referred to Imam Ali Hosp...

Traumatic growth arrest of the distal tibia: a clinical and radiographic review.

BACKGROUND Injury to the physis of the distal tibia in children can lead to subsequent growth arrest. This can result in physeal bars, leg-length discrepancies and angular deformities. METHOD The cases of 12 children with distal tibial growth arrest due to ankle trauma were reviewed. All were treated at a tertiary care institution between 1990 and 2002. RESULTS The average age at initial in...
